Our Review Methodology
How we research, evaluate, and recommend pet products. Every review and buying guide is written or reviewed by a credentialed expert whose specialization matches the product category.
The fundamentals
- Expert evaluation. Each product is assessed by a credentialed reviewer against the needs of the relevant species, age, and size, drawing on clinical and professional experience, manufacturer specifications, verified owner feedback, and published guidance.
- Credentialed reviewers. Reviews are written or reviewed by licensed and certified professionals: DVM/BVSc veterinarians, veterinary nutritionists, registered veterinary nurses/technicians, CPDT-KA trainers, and applied animal behaviorists. Reviewer credentials are listed on every page.
- No paid placements. We accept no payment from manufacturers to feature or rate products. Affiliate compensation never influences our recommendations.
- Standards-based. Where a recognized standard applies, we evaluate against it, for example the AAFCO nutrient profiles for food, ASTM toy safety, and EPA/FDA registration for pest and health products.
- Recall awareness. For food, treat, and supplement categories we check the FDA Animal Veterinary recall database and flag any active recall.
- Species-specificity. We never recommend a product across species without confirming it is appropriate for each. Flea/tick and health products receive explicit species-compatibility notes.
How our scoring works
Reviews use a multi-section scorecard on a 0-10 scale (typically Value, Build Quality, Ease of Use, Pet Suitability, and Safety). Scores reflect our reviewers' expert assessment based on the criteria above, product specifications, and aggregated owner feedback. Section averages produce the overall rating shown at the top of each review.
How we evaluate, by category
Dog, cat, and small-animal food
Reviewed by a veterinary nutritionist. We check the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement, review the ingredient list for quality and known problem additives, cross-reference the FDA Animal Veterinary recall database, and weigh aggregated owner feedback on palatability and digestibility. For higher-impact (YMYL) items we cite at least two authoritative sources (AAFCO, FDA-CVM, AVMA).
Toys, enrichment, and habitats
Reviewed by an animal behaviorist. We assess size and design against species-appropriate welfare guidance, material safety (no sharp edges, non-toxic materials), durability for the intended chewer/user, and escape-resistance where relevant, alongside aggregated owner durability feedback.
Health products, supplements, and flea/tick treatments
Reviewed by a veterinarian. We confirm species and weight appropriateness, note common contraindications, cross-reference active ingredients with ASPCA Animal Poison Control guidance, and include a safety note on every review in this category. All safety claims require a named authoritative source.
Harnesses, leashes, and training tools
Reviewed by a certified trainer. We assess fit across body shapes, escape-resistance, hardware durability, and welfare-friendly design, alongside aggregated owner feedback on real-world use.
